I’ve been in business for myself for many years and people are always commenting to me that they have recently developed a strong interest in doing the same. Of course, they do – they’re Americans! That’s how this country was founded and developed. There were always people who had great ideas or saw a common need and decided to move forward by opening a storefront and going into business for themselves. Somehow, we got of that track but today’s critical economic times are causing our American population to start seriously considering becoming entrepreneurs again.

There are always bumps and dips in the economy but there are always products and services that will be needed by the general population. Consider the things you personally do well; the things you have a genuine passion about; then consider developing a business around those talents and interests. Money is one thing but if you don’t enjoy or believe in what you’re doing, the money will never come. If you are passionate about your chosen profession then you are more likely to succeed. We all enjoy doing the things we enjoy.

Believe it or not, recessions have traditionally been ideal times to start new business structures. As a matter of fact, some of the largest companies in the United States today did just that. Microsoft was started during the recession and the oil crisis of the mid 1970s. And Southwest Airlines began in 1971 as a regional carrier that offered passengers a new method of flying at a cut rate. Southwest decided not to assign seating or offer any type of food or entertainment on its flights. Its management also determined that it would be more profitable for them not to operate out of expensive major airport hubs where they would have compete directly with established air carriers. So the lesson here is to look for the business signs that are staring you in the face and then develop a business plan that will allow you to take full advantage of the current business situation.

You may know your personal skills very well but as a small business owner you will also have to know much more to keep your new company running efficiently. The problem of finding customers always comes up and it’s not an easy thing to overcome. You’ll also need to know about marketing, sales, business development, bookkeeping, and how this new plan will affect your personal financial life from banking to payroll to taxes. There’s not many of us that can do all of these tasks well so you may need to hire someone to do some of these things for you. For example, get an accountant to handle your banking, bookkeeping and tax issues. Get educated in some of the other issues at your local community college or buy a book at the local book store. Check the Internet – there might even be a class specific to one of these topics offered online via webinar or on CD.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) has a great website that will guide you through a variety of topics to help you receive a solid start. From developing a strategic business plan to handling legal concerns, the SBA can be a big help to you. They also offer a mentorship programs through the Service Corps of Retired Executive (SCORE), small business development centers and a network of training and counseling services to guide you over the rough spots.

The SBA also has a lot of information on franchising which has become a huge method of doing business on your own. Some franchise licenses take quite a bit of cash to initially get involved with and others not so much. Choose the one that fits your abilities and interests and see if a franchise fits your personal business acumen. There are also local SBA offices around the country that will assist you in a variety of ways. The Small Business Administration is a great place to gather some vital information and you can’t beat the cost….FREE.

As I said in the beginning of this article, there may not be a better time than right now to start your own business. I personally know a number of people who have done so already and I couldn’t be happier for them. There’s just something about being in total charge of your personal financial future while helping others with your product or service. Don’t get me wrong, running a business will take up most of your time in the beginning – it’s going to be hard work and you will have to put forth the effort. If you don’t think you’re going to like a 15 hour daily schedule or working on the weekend – running your own enterprise probably isn’t for you. But if the freedoms of personal independence while doing something you enjoy sounds appealing to you – press on! You’ll never look back! America was founded on small business and I’m convinced it’s the American entrepreneur who will ultimately bring the United States back to prosperity.

The problem is that many first-time entrepreneurs fail to actually plan the business before sinking cash into the startup. No matter how great a business idea is, it can’t succeed without detailed planning. Take the time to work through every angle of your business idea. Not only will you have a better grasp of how far your business can go, you will also reduce your risk and prepare yourself to make the best decisions as you go.

2. Failure to Understand and Comply with Legal Obligations — An unbelievable number of entrepreneurs leave the legal aspects of business startup to someone else or, worse, ignore them altogether. Eventually this failure to comply with legal obligations will come back to bite you…and the outcome can be devastating. Every entrepreneur must understand and secure all necessary licenses and permits, and set up compliance systems for taxes and fees due the local, state, and federal government.

3. Poor (or no) Marketing Planning – Marketing is the lifeblood of every business startup, and it is more than business cards and a yellow pages ad. A significant portion of your time and expense budget should be dedicated to marketing. Poor or no marketing equals no sales…equals business failure. Do your homework before you launch to identify your target markets, figure out how to best reach them, and establish clear objectives and evaluations to ensure your marketing efforts are paying off.

4. Poor (or no) Financial Management — Success in business is all about the bottom line — no profit, no business. Keeping the books correctly is half the battle. Too many first-time entrepreneurs are willing to turn over complete responsibility for the books to someone else — a dangerous decision that very often leads to business failure. Reviewing and analyzing the financial reports is the other half. It is critical for every business owner to understand what the financial reports mean and how a change in one area affects all the others. Cash flow issues are also major financial management problem for many startups in the earliest stages. Good planning before launching a startup will clarify how much cash on hand your business idea will need to succeed. Whether you consider yourself a numbers person or not, as a business owner it is critical that you take responsibility for learning and applying basic financial management skills if you want to succeed.

5. Sales Forecast Errors: Establishing your initial sales forecast can be difficult, but there are procedures you can follow to make it as realistic and accurate as possible. All too often would-be entrepreneurs build a sales forecast around what they would like to sell, rather than what they are likely to sell. While optimism is an excellent entrepreneurial trait, an overly optimistic sales forecast will leave you with serious cash flow problems and even greater difficulty in securing financing.

For example, one business plan we recently reviewed appeared well-written and professionally laid out. However, the sales forecast reflected sales that required every member of the staff to bill out 19 hours per day, 300 days per year. Another retail business showed average total purchases at $230 each, even though the average price of their products is only $12. Assuming that each customer will purchase an average of 19 items each time they visit is unrealistic. Any competent investor will look for these errors.

6. Under-Capitalization: Not starting with enough capital to support the business through the initial stages is a common error. By thoroughly planning your idea, you will know how much capital you need to cover while you build your customer base, including working capital to keep yourself in ramen noodles until your business takes off. Good planning will also increase the chance of securing investors, whether public (banks) or private (family and friends).

7. Poor Web Presence: An effective web presence is an absolute must for any modern business. Simply posting a website is not enough. In fact, uploading a website without marketing it is like posting ad copy only in your own living room — if your target market doesn’t see it, it might as well not exist. Many recent startups have crashed and burned because the entrepreneur thought that simply posting a website to the internet would drive sales. It won’t.

8. Leaving Critical Tasks “To the Professionals”: Many entrepreneurs believe that a good idea and solid operations are enough to build a successful business, so they opt to turn over critical startup tasks, like marketing and accounting, to outsourced professionals. For some, the business side of business just doesn’t interest them, so they choose to forgo learning the details of financial and marketing management. Eventually, these choices backfire. If you don’t know how the money works, you can’t make the best decisions for your business. If you are not aware of the outcomes of your marketing efforts, you can’t accurately forecast sales and thus can’t plan for the future. It’s your business, you need to know and understand every facet from the beginning, or you might as well be working for someone else.

9. No Ongoing Planning & Review: As the actual operations of a startup take up more and more of an entrepreneur’s time, it is very easy to overlook the critical tasks of reviewing and planning. Every aspect of a company should be reviewed periodically, particularly the financial statements and marketing plan. If you don’t know where you are or where you have been, it’s impossible to know where you are going.

10. Lack of Patience – Pit of Despair: Every startup experiences a period of time between being ready to sell and actually building the sales. We call this gap the Pit of Despair because the entrepreneur is left wondering if they have made the right decisions and whether the business is ever going to work. Many startups hit this point and the entrepreneur quits in frustration. Startups don’t generally succeed overnight. The Pit of Despair should be used to refine internal systems, work through free internet marketing techniques (participate in relevant forums, write and publish articles, build website content), and plan for the future of the business. Don’t let the inevitable delay destroy your chances of success — plan for it, expect it, and use the time wisely.

For the most part, a strong focus on the three keys of startup success (planning, marketing, and financial management) will overcome most of the common reasons for business failure. Pay attention to the details from the beginning, learn all you can about running your own business, and don’t let anything get in the way of building your business into the thriving company it can be.

As humans, we have the habit of continually doing the familiar, whether it works for or against us, for no other reason than it is familiar, comfortable and, therefore, perceived as stable and safe (whether or not it actually is).

There’s a fable about a frog that jumps into a pot of water; what he doesn’t know is that it’s sitting on top of a burning stove so the water will boil. As the water heats up, he’s so busy doing the backstroke and enjoying the water that he doesn’t realize that the water is becoming hot; instead, his body is simply adjusting to the temperature. He never does jump out, so we can surmise what happens to him, but he stayed where he was because he mentally adjusted to the boiling water. How are you doing the same thing in your life? That is, where are you resisting change, particularly with regard to your relationship with money?

Your own life experience probably has shown you that there is a varying degree of discomfort when you have created anything new in your life. That discomfort is noticed in both in the transition and as you got used to the new thing or state of being. Bottom line is that it’s scary to go beyond your comfort zone and into something new that you aren’t quite certain about and which can alert your internal security systems to go into protective overdrive.

That internal security mechanism actually seeks to consolidate the energy in order to protect and maintain until the new information can be thoroughly assessed and assimilated. The goal is an essential human need for stability, safety and security. However, since the physical world is fundamentally based around constant change, you never truly get stability, safety and security when it is attached to the physical. There is nothing external that can give you the sense of being grounded and safe like your own internal connection to Source energy.

When you are tapped into Source energy as your stability, you can be completely and amazingly open to the new experiences for which you are asking. In fact, your strength is in your vulnerability; that is, as vulnerable as you may seem, it is that vulnerability that has no shields, defenses or barriers to what is coming in to your experience.

On the surface, that can seem really unprotected, however, if you know that you are safe and secure in every moment, trusting and knowing that Source has you covered, you have no need to put up false barriers (even if they are motivated by a positive intention to care for yourself).

As Source is giving you messages that are in your best and highest good, it’s vital to be open to receiving them AND to taking action based on what you learn. Some of them may have challenges in them, like moving to a new state in order to grow to your next best level, but if you can see the magic in the message, it makes it a lot easier to follow them.

Remember that you are co-creating with Source energy. By feeling into what you want, you are aligning your energy with Source intentionally. By being open to experiences without having resistance to change, you are allowing yourself to receive without restriction, and that is highly attractive for all things related to enjoying life with more wealth in every way.

You get paid to do these product tests and normally keep the product – it’s a lot of fun and makes money too!  Basically anything that goes into your shopping cart at the supermarket is something Pinecone tests.  We get frozen dinners, pizzas, and ice cream in boxes frozen with dry ice.

Basically Pinecone does:

PineCone Research is a new products panel.  As such, we ask for your opinions on product ideas for items that are not generally available to the public.  In exchange for the opportunity to tell manufacturers your opinion about these products, we require that you sign a security agreement at the front of each and every interview.  This agreement is legally binding and states that you will keep the information that you saw in the interview confidential.  It further states that you will promise not to copy, print or download any part of the interview or the pictures shown to you.  It also states your agreement that others in your household will keep this information confidential.

In addition, you confirm that you and any one in your immediate household and family are not employed in a consumer package goods company, marketing researcher or advertising industry.  Falsification of this information may be grounds for legal action.
